Abstract

527,612. Gaseous-fuel injectors. TOWNSHEND, E. F. R. April 20, 1939, No. 11871. [Class 7 (iii)] In a compressed-gas fuel injector for internal-combustion engines, means are provided at the injection orifice for establishing a hot zone of sufficiently high temperature to initiate ignition. Gas supplied under pressure through passages 28, 26, 24, 25, 23 is injected through an orifice 4 when a valve 2 is lifted by pressure supplied at 14 from a fuel pump to a piston 8 on the valve stem 1. The gas pressure raises a serrated baffle 46 from a conical seating on a flame plate 45, which is formed with passages 47 through which air is drawn from the compressed charge in the cylinder, to mix with ' the gas passing through the venturishaped passage in the plate 45. The valve 2 is closed by a spring 17, and the baffle 46 is closed by springs 39, 40 on its stem 41. For providing the hot igniting-zone, a terminal 35 is connected in series with an inductive resistance, dynamo &c. and carries a disc 34 bearing on the flange 38 of a cup 37 on which rest the springs 39, 40 on the stem 41, so that when the baffle 46 is moved downwards away from the flame plate 45, an electric arc is formed between them. High-tension ignition may be used with sparking-points adjacent the injection nozzle ; or an incandescent electric igniter may be employed. Lubricating-oil may be supplied to an annular recess 20 around the valve stem 1, and another annular recess 19 above this is connected to atmosphere in order to prevent gas leaking along the stem from reaching the hydraulic chamber 13 around the piston 8. Excess fuel supplied by the'pump to this chamber passes back to the tank through a relief valve.
