[Class 38 (v)] A plurality of series - connected breaks are produced between fixed contacts 67 and movable contacts 91 disposed, respectively, on fixed insulating discs 61 spaced apart by rings 63, and movable insulating discs 85 which are spaced by rings 87 and disposed on a square-section shaft 83 with cylindrical ends and an opening spring 111. The discs and rings may be of horn fibre or other gas-evolving material or of material not readily decomposed by the arc. The fixed discs and rings are secured against rotation by a key 65 engaging aligned slots therein and a slot in the casing 57, the latter having threaded closure caps 55 between which and an outer vitreous casing 53 are resilient gaskets 59. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the structure comprises an upper and a lower section, the discs of the upper being wider-spaced so as to interrupt heavy currents, and being adapted to move before the discs in the lower section, as by providing separate shafts with a lost-motion connection between them. Fig. 5 shows the construction of contacts 67, 91. The latter each comprise a pair of contacts 93 rigidly clamped by a rivet 95 in a shouldered opening 97. Each contact 67 comprises two annular members 69 slidable on a rivet 71 in an aperture 73 of a reduced part 75 extending into an opening 77 in the disc 61. The parts 69 are urged apart by a spring 79, and connected by a semi-flexible shunt 81.
