Abstract

527,137. Shot-gun cartidges. GARKOVENKO, W. DE. May 31, 1939, No. 15996. [Class 9 (i)] Concentration of the shot charge in flight is regulated by enclosing the charge in a light fabric envelope 1, with open front end 2, and connecting a cardboard or like disc 4 at the base of the bag by a cord 5 to an under-shot wad 6. Wads of variable sizes and forms are used to produce varying dispersals of the shot, and the size of the aperture 2 and tautness of the envelope 1 may be varied to the same end. Apparatus for making and filling the envelope 1 and assembling the washer 4 and connected wad 5 is also described. The blank for the envelope 1 is a circular disc which is creased and then wrapped in spiral folds around the end of a mandrel 11, Fig. 5, by a pronged tool applied with a twisting movement to the end of the mandrel. Two rings 16, 17 are then passed on to the mandrel, the first being a close fit to tension the fabric. A plunger 12 within the mandrel is advanced by a hammer blow to form the perforation 2. The mandrel is then withdrawn, and the envelope is mounted in position, while remaining within the ring 17, in a press in which it is filled with shot and the disc 4 with string attached to the wad 6 is inserted, and the envelope closed by a cord 3.
