Abstract
544,814. Blasting cartridges. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I., JOHNSON, C. R., PILCHER, W. S., and STANLEY, C. B. Sept. 25, 1940, No. 14547. [Class 9 (i)] A blasting. cartridge has a pleated end, each pleat comprising the whole thickness of the wrapper, and with alternate pleating folds all round the periphery appearing on the outside and inside of the closure, which is dished to lock the pleats together. The wrapper may be in the form of a tube or may be waxed paper wrapped around the explosive in two or more folds. The end of the cartridge is pressed into a ribbed hollow conical die provided with outer and inner edges 9 and 7. in the form of spiral teeth, which bend the end of the wrapper inwardly and at the same time crease the paper into folds 20, which have an inclination to the axis of the cartridge as shown in Fig. 9. Coacting with the die is a crimping plunger 10 on which is mounted, to have relatively longitudinal motion, a sleeve 11 having escape apertures 14 for wax and an undercut lower edge. The plunger is rotatably mounted in its support and on being pressed downwardly, enters the die, the sleeve 11 pressing over the folds further and the central plunger 10 dishing the end of the wrapper, so that the folds overlap each other and are locked at the centre.
