MATCH BOOK COVER Filed July 29, 1943 Patented Feb..20,'1945:
MATCH BOOK COVER Lawson R. De Lauder, Bartow, Fla.
Application July 29, 1943, Serial No. 496,643
2 Claims.
This invention relates to holders for match books of the type ordinarily constructed of cardboard and utilized largely for advertising purposes.
.The object of the invention is to provide a holder of the type indicated of an improved and simplified form offering an increased area for the display of advertisting matter; greater protection for the match book proper; and improved safety for the user in striking matches, as will be hereinafter more fully amplified.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter 'more particularly described and claimed.
One sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof, in which like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the inside face of the blank of the improved holder Figure 2 is a similar view to Figure l with the match book unit positioned on the blank.
Figure 3 is an illustration of the next step in the production of the blank in which the side wings have been folded over the match book;
Figure 4 illustrates the next step in the formation of the cover showing the leg portion folded back upon itself to form the striking pleat;
Figure 5 illustrates the next step in forming the holder in which the leg part has been folded up to complete the striking pleat and form the back and front cover portions;
Figure 6 is a reverse view of the structure of Figure 5;.and
Figure 7 is a side elevation of the structure illustrated in Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary view showing the spaced striking strips prior to folding.
Referring to the drawing, the improved match book holder is formed from a generally T-shaped blank I, having a substantially rectangular win. dow 2 cut out from the medial portion of thehead of the blank over which window 2 the match book proper 5 is adapted to be positioned to expose the heads and a major portion of the match stem so that the individual matches can be drawn through the window 2 by their heads and broken ofi as desired for use.
With the match book comb 5 positioned over the back face of the blank I, as illustrated in Figure 2, the ends 3-4 of the head Part of the blank are folded inwardlyover the match book in the position illustrated in Figure 3. These folds are made on the lines l5-|5 which converge slightly to allow for the normal bulge of the match book 5. Thereafter, the leg portion of the blank is folded back over the head part on the fold line 5, as illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, and then folded back upon itself on the transverse fold line I forming a pleat overlying the infolded end portions 3--3 of the head portion. Thereafter the remainder of the leg or, stem portion of the blank is folded on the transverse fold line 8.11pwardly and over the pleat into the position illustrated in Figure 5, forming the back part 9 at which stage of the assembly a single staple l9 will be applied securing the back portion 9, the inturned head portions 3-3, the match book proper, and the face formed with the window 2. The final step is the folding down over the face on the lines lG-IB of the match book of the front cover ortion I ll of the leg part of the blank, the lower edge ofwhich is adapted to be caught under the lower edge I2 of the window 2, which, for this purpose, is preferably formed with end notches H permitting the outward flaring of this portion of the cover.
For convenience in folding, the head portion of the blank may be formed with notches l3--l3 which permit a neater fit when the end head portions 3-'-3 are turned over the match book.
On the inner adjacent faces of the pleat formed by the folding back of the leg or stem portion of the blank upon itself are positioned coated strips of striking abrasive 4 so that when a match has been detached from the match book 5 through window 2, it can be ignited by having its head drawn with a rapid stroke transversely through the pleat with no danger of burning the fingers or igniting the remaining matches in the match book whether the cover has been closed or not.
It will be observed With'applicants improved structure that the back and front cover portions are entirely free from the match book holding portions of the blank 'sothat the entire area of the back and front cover portions are available for advertisting matter, as well as the smaller portions surrounding the window 2 and the back portions ofthe infolded head parts 3-3 and the outer exposed face of the'pleat part.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A match book holder comprising a substantially T-shaped blank of cardboard having a centrally positioned window in the head part with a match book positioned over the window through which window the heads and a major portion of the match stems are exposed, the ends of the head part folded in over the match book and the leg of the blank folded back upon said infolded head parts and upon itself to form a pleat, and then folded over the assembly to constitute back and front portions with a common means for securing the superposed head parts, match book and leg parts.
2. A match book holder comprising a substantially T-shaped blank of cardboard having a. centrally positioned window in the head part through which the heads and a major portion of the match stems will be exposed, a. match book positioned over the window, the ends or the head part folded in over the match book, and the leg of the blank folded back upon said infolded head parts and upon itself to form a pleat and then folded over the assembly to constitute back and front parts, the edge of the window adjacent the fold between the head and leg part notched at each end, with a common means securing the superposed head parts, match book and leg parts,
10 notehesin theedge of the window.
