9 2 INVENTOR.
Patented Mar. 14, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BOOK MATCHES AND COVER Clarence H. Macbeth, Oakland, Calif. Application December 15, 1941, Serial No. 423,061
3 Claims. '(Cl. 206-29) This invention relates to improvements of book matches and more particularly to book match covers, that provide maximum safety.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a cover of the above mentioned character that will provide protection from personal injury or other damage by fire, caused by ignition of matches remaining in book from a spark from match being lighted.
Due to construction, possibility of fire is reduced to a minimum, owing to the fact that matches are arranged in a sleeve that readily slides forward or backward within the outside cover, by a slight pressure of finger, sleeve is pressed back and all matches are protected from exposure while lighting match that has been removed for use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a book match cover of the above mentioned character that is compact, convenient and practical in use, also inexpensive to manufacture and if so desired the front, back face and top saddle may be used for display or commercial advertisements.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
Fig. 1 is a view of book match cover complete with matches, and striking flint at bottom.
Fig. 2 is a view of complete book match, with match sleeve exposed, in position to remove match for use.
Fig. 3 is a view of book match cover with open end showing channels in which match sleeve slides.
Fig. 4 is a view of match sleeve completed as it appears in upright position, outside of cover.
Fig. 5 is enlarged sectional view of cover with match sleeve fully enclosed, shown by line dart 5-5 in Fig. 1.
Figs. 6 and 7 are line drawings on reduced scale, of cover and match sleeve, with broken lines denoting necessary folds to shape and form Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 respectively.
Fig. 8 is a View in detail showing the method of packaging matches, which forms the sliding sleeve.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5-5 denotes gang matches secured by wire staple l2, in base 9--9, formed by folds at scored lines Ill-I and ll-l I, at both ends of Fig. 7, lines l3l3 and l4l4 allow hinge action, allowing -5, after being secured and fastened, by staple l2, to fold back to back 19-!9, thus completing construction of match sleeve.
Broken lines 15-15, Iii-l6 and |l--ll denote scored folds that give shape and form to cover as shown in three (3) different positions, in Figs.
, 2, and 3 respectively. Folds l5-|5 and Iii-l5 provide channels I8l 8, for base 9-9, to slide in.
In assembling, Fig. 8, as shown, should be taken as inside unit, matches 55, faced on cover 2020, match base 9-9, placed in channels l8l8, the two ends. brought together and flint 23 applied, this completes assembly.
Fig. 8, as a unit is encased in cover unit Fig. 3, as described in directions for assembling.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the device and that certain changes in the size or materials may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A match package comprising a casing having open ends, a filler for said casing comprising partitioning means frictionally receivable in said casing through an open end thereof and having a gang of matches afllxed on opposite sides thereof and supported thereby, said partitioning means comprising a sheet of material folded to provide laterally extending wings whose overall width substantially equals the internal width of said casing.
2. A match package comprising a casing having open ends, a filler for said casing comprising a pair of partition walls disposed back to back and frictionally receivable in said casing through an open end thereof and each wall having a gang of matches afiixed thereto and carried thereby, said walls comprising a single sheet of material folded to provide laterally extending wings disposed to overlie the heads of said match gangs.
3. A match package comprising a continuous casing having open ends and an internal rib rising medially from the bottom thereof, a filller for said casing comprising a pair of partition walls frictionally receivable in said casing through an open end thereof and on opposite sides of said rib and each having a gang of matches amxed thereto, said walls comprising a single sheet of material folded to provide laterally extending wings overlying the heads of said match gangs.
CLARENCE H. MACBETH.
