Abstract

526,677. Making razors. WAINWRIGHT, J. E., and HARLEY, S. J. Feb. 22, 1939, Nos. 5850 and 9254. [Class 83 (ii)] In the manufacture of tubular blades for mechanically operated razors blanks are turned from bar stock faced and parted and are then drilled eccentrically, reamered and tapped. The hole by which the cutter is reciprocated is then drilled and the blank is hardened and tempered, and if necessary, the threads are lapped. The blank is then mounted on an eccentric mandrel and ground externally to cut through the threads at the thin side of the tube to form a series of slits having cutting edges b, Fig. 3. If the ends of the threads are sufficiently radiused cutting edges of quasi-hollow ground form may be produced. The guard may be produced similarly to the cutter, the blank being bored either concentric or eccentric. If eccentric, the slots may be produced by external grinding with a multi-ribbed wheel. Two or more parallel series of slots may be formed in this way. In a modification, the internal threads are concentric and the external . grinding operation is carried out eccentrically.
