Taps; screw-cutting dies. -In a modification of the s.crew - thread cutters described in the parent Specification, the height of the teeth behind the cutting- edges is in all cases at least equal to the height at the cutting-edges. In a tap having three flutes, Fig. 1, the tooth c<1> which, if cut according to the eccentric core shown, would have a height decreasing from the cutting edge f to the trailing edge f<1>, has its height made uniform by cutting away the shaded portion x from the core. The tooth height may increase from f to f<1>. In a further modification, teeth cut on an eccentric core may alternate with teeth cut on a concentric core, some or all of the latter being cut below the concentric circular core to provide non-cutting guiding teeth. Turning.-The teeth are cut with the aid of a templet l, Fig. 6, which rotates with a tap blank a and controls a turning tool o through a tracer n and a lever mounted on the tool-carriage p.
