[Class 83 (iii)] A face milling-cutter for forming a smooth surface on a work piece when the cutter is rotated and relatively fed in a direction parallel to said surface comprises a body 23 with inclined radial slots 24 in one face adapted to receive blades 25 clamped in position by wedges 28 and screws 29. Each blade is divided longitudinally into eight parallel steps 30a .. 30h of equal length the adjacent ends of the edges being joined by a plurality of short transverse edge portions 31. The axial distance between two adjacent steps decreases from the outermost to the innermost steps, as shown in Fig. 6. In operation the cutter is adjusted with the plane of the innermost steps 30h of each blade in the plane of the required finished surface. The cutter is then rotated and fed along the face of the work at such a rale that the cutting edge of the outermost step 30a of one blade is followed across the work by the cutting edge of 'the step 30b of the succeeding blade and so on, the steps of the various blades thus co-operating in spiral groups as shown in Fig. 3, the outer stepped edges removing' thicker layers and the innermost edges making a thin finishing cut.
