[Class 4] In launching apparatus in which a piston 15 in a cylinder 40 is driven in a manner similar to that in which a projectile is-driven in a gun by the employment of combustion gases of gunpowder or other explosive products or mixtures, the combustion chamber is subdivided into two distinct chambers connected in series, with an adjustable, regulating pressure-reducing device 26 interposed between them. As shown, a catapult includes chambers 4, 14. A charge or cartridge 22 is adapted to be exploded in a chamber 1. The regulator 26 has a collar 27 adapted to fit an orifice 24 and when the pressure in the chamber 14 has risen to such a value that its action on the lower surface of the collar 27 overcomes the action of the spring 30, the regulator 26 is forced up and the collar clears the orifice 24, causing the pressure to fall due to the forcing out of the piston 15 which is connected to the launching carriage by cables and pulleys. When the carriage reaches the end of its stroke the momentum tends to cause reversal of the movement of the piston which increases the pressure in the chamber 14 and raises the regulator 26 to uncover an exhaust port 35. Movement of the regulator 26 is damped by a dash-pot 37.
