A variable ouput pump for pumping gases, comprising an outer fixed cylinder 1 and an inner cylinder 2 which is slidable axially in the outer cylinder 1, a piston 7 freely operative in the inner cylinder 2, which is formed with a valve controlled outlet opening 4 and means, (not shown) which is responsive to any variation in the stroke of the piston for adjusting the inner cylinder axially towards and away from the head of the piston to provide for constant compression when the pump is working at a reduced or increased output.
