Abstract

525,147. Amines. VEREINIGTE GLANZSTOFF-FABRIKEN AKT.-GES. Feb. 15, 1939, No. 4956. Convention date, March 1, 1938. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Amines of petroleum hydrocarbons are made by treating mineral oils, particularly petroleum with chlorine at temperatures below 40 ‹C. and causing ammonia to act on the chlorination products under pressure and at raised temperatures in the presence of indifferent solvents, e.g. methyl alcohol or acetone, which are capable of dissolving ammonia and chlorinated petroleum. The amount of chlorine taken up in the chlorination step may vary up to 100 per cent. of the weight of petroleum. In an example, American petroleum is chlorinated while cooling, washed with water and dilute soda solution, and the chlorinated product, containing about 19 per cent. of chlorine, is heated in an autoclave with alcoholic ammonia solution. The products may be converted into water-soluble salts which are wetting agents and may be added to sulphuric acid spinning baths for viscose. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 339,962 [Class 2 (ii)].
