Abstract

Before dyeing, wool, silk and other protein fibres are treated in a cleaning bath containing a wetting agent and an inorganic or organic acid, the acid strength being adjusted to correspond to a strength of the order of and up to 0.7Be sulphuric acid. The cleansing bath may be prepared with hard water at room temperature. Specified acids include sulphuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric, formic and acetic. Specified wetting agents include the alkylsulphates, alkylsulphonates, alkylarysulphonates, their chlorinated derivatives, amidesulphates, alkyl phosphates, cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, cetyl pyridinium bromide and other cationic agents, and nonionic agents such as those obtained by condensing ethylene oxide with compounds containing a long hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain and an active hydrogen atom. When using cationic and non-ionic agents, alcohols, phenols, amines, aldehydes and other polar compounds or solvent hydrocarbons may be added to the bath. The dyebath may be prepared in hard or soft water without addition of sodium sulphate, acids or levelling agents; if any precipitation occurs in the dyebath an anionic surface active agent may be added to ensure solubilization and dispersion. In an example (all parts by weight) a bath is prepared from one part of sulphuric acid, five parts of a 10 per cent aqueous solution of an anionic detergent such as sodium lauryl sulphate and 200 parts of water. Wool is pretreated in this bath and then dyed.
