Abstract

523,612. Pistons. STERLING CORPORATION. Jan. 9, 1939, No. 717. Convention date, Jan. 17, 1938. [Class 122 (i)] In a piston for an internal combustion engine comprising a head 1 and a skirt provided with bearing bosses 6, connected to the head in the region of said bosses, and having elliptical cylinder-bearing portions 8, 9 separated from the head by horizontal slots 15 in the region of the bosses, the skirt is internally reinforced by ribs 12, 13 radiating from the bosses in opposite directions. A heavy rib 21 may be provided on the rim 11 of the skirt. The wrist-pin bearing connectors 3 are reinforced by ribs 4, 5, and above the rib 21 is a horizontally extending opening 14. The arcuate portions extending around the ends of the wrist pin axis are relieved as at 10. The skirt is thinner at the top than at the bottom and its upper portions are spaced from the connectors 3 by openings 16, a portion 20 of the area 10 being further relieved to facilitate the formation of these latter openings. One of the bearing portions 8, 9 may be formed with a vertical slot 17 which joins the slot 15, the upper corners of the cut portions of the skirt being stiffened by a circumferential rib 18 which decreases in depth to the slot.
