Abstract

1479430 Engine construction NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 18 June 1974 [18 Dec 1973 21 June 1973] 58491/73 and 26071/74 Divided out of 1479139 Heading FIB An I.C. engine with exposed cylinders 1, 2, 3 is reinforced by ribs 17 attached at their upper ends to the cylinder head and at their lower ends to the crank-case 7, each rib lying in a plane which extends obliquely to the axis of a cylinder between the combustion chamber of said cylinder and an adjacent main bearing. The engine structure is further strengthened by horizontal ribs 23, 24, flanges 10, 11, and a vertical rib (22), Fig. 2 (not shown) extending longitudinally within a cover 5, rib 24 being substantially level with the lower edges of the piston skirts when the latter are at top dead centre. The engine is cooled by a cooling system which is concentrated in the regions which produce greatest heat, as in parent Specification.
