Abstract

523,589. Incandescent electric lamps. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. June 12, 1939, No. 17156. Convention date, June 14, 1938. [Class 39 (ii)] In order to render gasfilled filament lamps safe against explosion when their useful life has come tc an end, they are formed with bulbs 1, Fig. 1, having a capillary extension 5 which can be filed off or broken by pliers so as tc allow of slow escape of the gas. Where the inner bulb is contained within an outer bulb 8, Fig. 2, the outer bulb is formed with an opening closed and sealed by a removable glass cover 10. Alternatively, the capillary extensions may project through an opening in the outer bulb which is covered by a spring cap or is filled in with cement, wax, or lead. The outer bulb may have, integral with it, an interior annular cup surrounding the extension so that when the outer bulb is broken the extension is fractured and the gas released.
