Abstract

523,385. Seals; eyelets; eyeletting. OWEN, A. H., and ATTARI, H. Jan. 4, 1939, No. 312. [Class 146 (ii)] [Also in Group VII] Envelopes are sealed by inserting an eyelet through at least two thicknesses of material, and expanding the inner end by a hand tool inserted through a slot 17 in the envelope. The slot is level with or just beyond the end of the flap 15. A hand tool for setting the eyelet or tubular rivet 18 has a wide shallow jaw 17 for insertion in the slit and the plunger 30 is operated by a lever 26 and has a screwed head 34 carrying a spring plug 37, slightly conical. The jaw 17 has a projection 23 to position the washer 21 . The washer has an annular corrugation 24 engaged by the splayed skirt of the eyelet. The flaps may be gummed in addition to the metal seal. The Provisional Specification describes the use of a tubular rivet inserted into the envelope and spread outside the closing flap, a sealing-cap being provided if required and embossed by the setting-tool. Also the sealing flap may extend out through the slit or in through the slit and be folded back upon itself before the rivet is inserted.
