Abstract

522,722. Feeding sheets. HARRIS-SEYBOLDPOTTER CO. March 18, 1939, No. 8698. Convention date, March 21, 1938. [Class 100 (i)] Sheets are fed to the impression cylinder 21 of a printing-machine, or to any other sheethandling machine by a feed cylinder 20 which is driven so as to have a period of rest while grippers 43 take a registered sheet from a pivoted flap 71, Fig. 10, of a feed table. The cylinder 20 is then accelerated to attain the speed of the cylinder 21, and transfers the sheet to grippers 57, Fig. 15, of cylinder 21 while travelling at the speed of this cylinder. The cylinder 20 then travels at the speed of the cylinder 21 for a while and is finally decelerated and brought to a position shown in Fig. 10 in which the grippers 43 pass beyond the rising front stops 66, which are raised and lowered by cam mechanism 78 ... 85 associated with the cylinder 21. The movement of the stops 66 also controls the movement of the table flap 71 which is raised to feed position by a roller 70 carried by the support of the stops, and falls to permit of a ready passage of the grippers 43 as the stops 66 are lowered. The cylinder 20 may be given a slight reverse movement to take the sheet from the stops 66. The flap 21 is formed with slots to permit of passage of the grippers 43. The grippers 43 are normally closed under spring action and are opened to receive the sheets by a part 51, Fig. 15, on a lever oscillated by a cam on the shaft of the cylinder 21, and are opened to transfer the sheet to the grippers 57 by means of a fixed cam 56. The grippers may operate as described in Specification 506,636. The means for controlling the motion of the cylinder 20 comprise a pair of rollers 41, 42 and a cam 40 on the shaft of the cylinder 21, the rollers 41, 42 co-operating in turn with afan-shaped projection 37 on a plate 36 attached to the cylinder 20. Rollers 38, 39 on the plate 36 co-operate with the cam 40 to maintain correct contact of the rollers 41, 42 with the fan 37 and to reverse the cylinder. The position at which the drive of cylinder 20 commences is shown at Fig. 5, and the roller 41 is shown engaging the fan. When the cylinder 20 has accelerated to the speed of the cylinder 21 the drive is taken up by a segmental gear 34' on the shaft 31 of the cylinder which drives a segmental gear on the shaft of cylinder 20 for about 27 degrees. The deceleration of the cylinder 20 is effected by the roller 41 and fan 37, and cam 40 acts on the rollers 38, 39 to effect the reversal. The cam 40 may be shaped so as to omit this reversal. A cam-operated stop is used to check the reverse movement of the cylinder 20. The invention is applicable to overlapping stream feeds,
