Abstract
499,101. Feeding sheets. SPIESS, G. May 4, 1938, No. 13373. Convention date, May 4, 1937. [Class 100 (i)] A sheet-feeding device can be adapted for an overlapping stream feed or for feeding sheets singly without overlap by feeding the sheets in succession from a pile to a feed table fitted with a series of intergeared slow moving feed rollers 4, and an alternating set of intergeared rollers 5 moving at a high speed. The sheets are pressed against the rollers 4 or 5 by means of pressure members such as rollers, or balls 19 which are carried by cages secured to rods 20 slidable in guides 21 to permit the balls 19 to co-operate selectively with the rollers 4, for overlapping feed, or with the rollers 5, as shown, for single feed. The rollers 4 are driven from the main shaft 9 by an eccentric gear 10 and a gear 11 carried by links 12, 13 which drives the first roller 4 with an irregular motion adapted to retard the sheets as they near the front stops. For single feed the sheets are first advanced at slow speed from the pile by a roller 6 co-operating with a roller 4, and then at high speed by co-operation of a roller 31 with a roller 5, the rollers 6, 31 being mounted on a lever 32 oscillated by a cam on the shaft 9 so as to operate alternately. The sheet is then advanced by the rollers 5 and balls 19 until the last roller 5 is reached. A swinging carrier 22 carries two sets of balls 19 and is positioned to co-operate with the last roller 5 until the sheet is clear of the preceding roller 5 when the carrier is oscillated to free the balls 19 from the last roller 5. A sheet stop 45 is then raised to stop the sheet temporarily, and then the carrier 22 brings the other set of balls 19 into contact with the last roller 4 and the sheet is advanced slowly to the front stops (not shown). When the rods 20 are moved by a handle 40 to move the balls 19 into contact with the rollers 4 for overlapping feed, oscillation of the carriers 22, 32 is prevented by the engagement of the handle with the carrier 22, and by a stop 41 on the rods 20 which actuates a lever 43 for tripping the actuating mechanism of the carrier 32. The stop 45 is also tripped for overlapping feed.
