Abstract

522,677. Vehicle suspensions. THIRY, L. June 20, 1938, Nos. 18227 and 18228. Convention dates, June 22, 1937, and Dec. 6, 1937. [Classes 103 (vi), 108 (ii) and 108 (iii)] A suspension for the undercarriages of rail or road vehicles comprises rubber rings between two elements formed with concentric circular grooves having inclined faces. In one form, Fig. 1, suitable for use in a rail vehicle suspension, the device comprises cylindrical members 1, 2 provided with concentric circular grooves 3, 4 of tapered X-section, which are spaced radially so that the tapered ribs 5, formed between each pair of grooves on the member 1, enter the grooves 4, and the ribs 6 on the member 2 enter the grooves 3. Rubber rings 7 are interposed between the adjacent parallel surfaces of corresponding ribs and grooves. The rings may be of circular, oval &c. X-section so that they roll without slipping on the surfaces when relative movement takes place between the members 1, 2, or they may be of rectangular &c. X- section so that they neither roll nor slip on the surfaces. In the latter case they may be adhesively secured to the surfaces by vulcanizing action &c. Rubber rings 12, 13 are also interposed between the inner surfaces and outer surfaces of the members 1, 2. In a second form, Fig. 4, suitable for use in a road vehicle suspension, the device comprises an outer casing formed by similar members 1, 1a bolted together, which encloses an inner member formed by two similar members 2, 2a. Alternatively the inner member may be a single member 2 formed with grooves on its upper and lower faces. Rubber rings 7, 12 and 13 are interposed between the members 1, 2 and rings 7a, 13a between the members 1a, 2a: A ring 12a is interposed between the inner surfaces of the member 2a and an extension of the member 2. The rings 7a may have the same or different characteristics as the rings 7. In operation, the rings 7 damp downward movement and the rings 7a rebound movement of the suspension. Fig. 2 shows a tramway vehicle suspension comprising two of the devices of Fig. 1. The members 1, 2 are secured respectively to a chassis beam 18 and a beam 16 attached to the axle box 17 which slides in a bearing in the beam 18. The driving and braking torque on the wheel is balanced by the rings 12, 13 and these may be aided if desired by rubber rings interposed between the axle box 17 and its bearing. Each ring 7 or 7a may be replaced by a plurality of rings having the same or different . characteristics. Specification 490,804 is referred to.
