Abstract
522,586. Ceramic materials to be sealed into glass. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and LAIT, J. R. Dec. 9, 1938. No. 36013. [Class 22] [Also in Group XXXVI] Ceramic materials to be sealed. into glass are formed by mixing steatite with a refractory insulating material which alters its rate of expansion with heat without diminishing its electrical resistance. Preferably the rate of expansion with heat of the mixture is slightly greater than that of the glass into which it is to be sealed. For increasing the rate of expansion, magnesia may be used. Zirconia up to 10 per cent. increases the rate of expansion and in larger quantities diminishes it. For lowering the rate of expansion, zirconium silicate may be used. The mixture of the finely powdered material, which should contain not less than 50 per cent. of steatite is, with or without a binder, fired at 1350‹C. The material is afterwards coated with glass of the composition of that to which it is to be sealed. Specifications 260,298 and 282,403 [both in Class 22], are referred to.
