Abstract

522,290. Switches, partly electromagnetic. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., COX, H. E., and GIBSON, A. C. Dec. 7, 1938, No. 35738. [Class 38 (v)] In order to utilize the electrodynamic effect of a current-loop to reinforce the contactpressure, the movable contact is made in two parts 4, 5 of which 4 is formed with the contact surface and is pivoted at 6 to a channel-member 1 pivoted to a support 3. The other part 5 is longer, is pivoted at 8 to the first part, and freely abuts on the hinge-mounting! of member 1. An opening spring or springs 9 acts on the member 5 to .assist the electrodynamic effect in the closed position but in the opening movement, the spring 9 initially causes the movable contact to rub or roll on the fixed contact 7 before producing separation. The invention is also illustrated in its application to the switch of Specification 522,291, Fig. 2 (not shown).
