Abstract

521,932. Bearings. CORNELL, E. S. Nov. 28, 1938, No. 34653. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] A bearing assembly for a rotary shaft 14 comprises spaced bushings 24, 25, with a compressible packing ring 30 between them, external adjustable means being provided for compressing the packing and thus forcing it against the shaft. As shown, for a submerged pump, the packing ring 30 is cup-shaped, of a synthetic rubber, and is pressed by a spring 32. The spring pressure is transmitted to the ring 30 by washers 31, 35, and by a pair of rods 36 passing through holes in the bushing 24. The spring pressure is adjusted by a screwed cap 34. Packing 40 in the latter is compressed by a sleeve 41.
