520,853. Back-pedalling brakes for cycles. FRANCIS & BARNETT, Ltd., FRANCIS, G. I., and KING, W. K. Nov. 2, 1938, No. 31663. [Class 136 (i)] In back-pedalling brake-operating mechanism for cycles, of the type operated by projections &c. on the crank shaft or crank on backpedalling and adapted to be thrown out of action to enable the cycle to be wheeled backwards, the brake-operating connection is effected through a trip lever which can be thrown out of operation when desired and is adapted to be reset by a trip device associated with the crank when the latter is rotated in a forward direction. A bell-crank lever 6, 6a is mounted to turn on the pedal-crank shaft 3, the arm 6 being connected by a rod 10 to the brake. A trip lever 7, 7a is pivoted to a lug 6b on the arm 6a, and is engaged on back-pedalling, by one or more projections 8 on the boss of the crank 4, the arm 7 of the trip lever extending laterally over the arm 6a of the bell-crank lever, which is thus turned in the clockwise direction to apply the brake. The arm 7 engages a rubber buffer 11 on the arm 6a. When it is desired to wheel the cycle backwards, the trip lever 7, 7a is turned clockwise through 90 degrees by hand into an inoperative position, the trip lever being held in either of its two positions by a right-angular spring 12 the horizontal arm of which lies between the trip lever and the arm 6a. The arm 6a is looped inwards to engage a fixed stop 13 on the chain stav 5 under the action of the brake return spring. The trip lever 7, 7a is automatically returned to its operative position on forward pedalling by a trip device 9 pivoted to the crank 4 and provided with a laterally-extending pin 9a for engagement with the arm 7a.
