Abstract
520,568. Diesel fuels. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. April 1, 1939, No. 10217. Convention date, July 14, 1938. [Class 91] Diesel hydrocarbon fuel is doped with an organic compound containing an oxy-nitrogen sulphur group attached to carbon, e.g. :- Mixtures of thio-nitrites with compounds of the type M# where M is an active metal and R an organic radical may be used, such mixtures being obtained by action of nitric oxide with a mercaptide, e.g. M (SC 2 H 5 ) 2 . Up to 3 per cent. is suitable. Specified dopes are:- methyl-,ethyl-, propyl-, isopropyl-, amyl-, hexyl heptyl-, octyl-, and triphenyl methyl thionitrites triethyl- and methyl diethyl sulphonium nitrates ; phenyl sulphonyl hydroxylamine ; and the thio-nitrites obtained by reacting mercaptans or like compounds, such as are obtained when desulphurizing petroleum oils, with nitrosyl chloride alkyl nitrites, nitrous acid, or nitric oxide. In examples : gas oil is doped with tertiary-butyl nitrosyl mercaptan ; and butyl nitrosyl mercaptan is made by reacting butyl mercaptan with nitrosyl chloride at - 5 to - 10‹C.
