Abstract

518,766. Thermionic valves. FERRANTI, Ltd., CHILCOT, A. L., and JACKSON, S. Aug. 25, 1938, No. 24972. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In an electric discharge device comprising an electrode or other member of highly refractory metal having a part welded to a metal piece to which another part of the same or another member of highly refractory metal is also welded, the metal piece has at least one radiating fin attached thereto or provided integrally therewith so as to prevent melting or vaporising of the piece during subsequent processing of the valve. A folded strip c of nickel with carbonized surfaces may be welded between the flanges b of a cylindrical anode a of molybdenum for a transmitting valve and the free edges then splayed to form radiating fins d. In a modification the fins may be splayed along only a portion of their length, the remaining portions being bent to tubular form e to receive a nickel or nickel alloy support wire which is welded thereto. Two or more strips of carbonized nickel may be used to give increased radiation area.
