518,694. Electrodeposition of chromium. INGENIEURSBUREAU LEMET CHROMIUM H. VAN DER HORST, N. V., and HORST, H. VAN DER. Sept. 3, 1938, Nos. 25806/38 and 5716/39. [Class 41] A surface layer of chromium on the cylinder bores of engines, pumps, air compressors &c. is treated so as to form small grooves, pits or depressions therein. The chromium layer is deposited electrolytically as described, for example, in Specifications 401,933, and 429,206, and the current is then reversed to remove some of the chromium. The reversal may take place in the same bath or in a separate bath containing a chromic acid solution or other acid or alkaline solutions. The surface of the chromium layer may be lightly ground before and after the reversal of the current. Temporary extensions of the same diameter as the cylinder bore may be secured to the end of the cylinder during treatment with reversed current to prevent excessive removal at the ends.
