Abstract

483,228. Ornamenting. GMACH, L. T. Oct. 9, 1936, No. 27422. [Class 93] [Also in Group XVI] A surface of aluminium or aluminium alloy is treated for the production of name plates and other articles by anodization, and parts of the anodized coating are subsequently removed by etching. The anodized surface is provided with an acid resist applied by hand painting, printing, stencilling, or photographic methods, and is then treated with a hydro-halogen acid, preferably hydrofluoric acid. When the coating is removed, the exposed metal surface may be further etched by means of a solution of a metal chloride, e.g. copper or iron chloride, or of hydrochloric acid. The recessed surface may be protected by a further anodization treatment, and the background or the etched recessed portions may be coloured by electrodeposition, spraying, printing, or the like. Alternatively, the original anodized surface can be coloured, and parts of the surface removed by etching.
