716,402. Printing surfaces. ALGRAPHY, Ltd. May 13, 1953 [Sept. 5, 1952], No. 22418/52. Class 100 (2) A lithographic printing plate comprises a plate formed wholly of, or having a surface coating of, aluminium or an aluminium alloy capable of having formed thereon by the process of anodizing, a hard resistant oxide coating, the printing surface being anodized and having the printing areas formed by copper or other ink accepting metal deposited on the anodic coating. To prepare the plate a plate of aluminium, for example, is cleaned and de-oxidized before being passed to an anodizing tank, the phosphoric acid process being preferred. After being anodized the p'ate is washed in water and transferred to a copper plating tank and after plating is again washed. The printing image is produced by forming a resistant coating over the image areas of the plate and etching to remove the copper from the unprotected areas. The plate is thus left with a copper deposit in the pores of the anodic coating over the image area. The resistant coating is then removed leaving a plate having the whole of its printing surface in a single plane.
