[Class 1 (i)] [Also in Groups IV and VIII] Phosphatide preparations are obtained by subjecting phosphatides to the action of gaseous sulphur dioxide in the presence of organic compounds containing a doubly linked oxygen atom and/or a hydroxy group attached to a carbon atom, e.g. saturated and unsaturated aliphatic aldehydes, ketones' and carboxylic acids of the aliphatic, aromatic or mixed series. The products, which may be sulphonated are stated to be auxiliary agents in the textile, paper and leather industries. Mixtures of both sulphonated and unsulphonated products with wool grease, paraffin, sulphonated glycerides, fats, oils, proteins, phosphatides, halogenated hydrocarbon and other solvents form stable aqueous solutions or emulsions: The products may be added to cosmetics and pharmaceutical preparations for internal and external use. In examples : (1) a phosphatide is treated with sulphur dioxide while heating with crotonaldehyde, citraldehyde, formaldehyde, cinnamic aldehyde, acetone, crotonic acid and allyl alcohol; (2) the products of example 1 are sulphonated in petroleum ether and neutralized. The sulphonated products emulsify organic solvents and lime soaps.
