Abstract
Secondary alcohols, obtained from aliphatic carboxylic acids having about 5 to 11 carbon atoms in the molecule or esters or anhydrides thereof by first converting them into ketones and then reducing the latter are sulphonated. The resulting products are stated to be solvents and wetting, foaming, cleansing and dispersing agents. The fatty acids used as starting material may be those obtained by the oxidation of fats, oils, waxes or hydrocarbons, or those obtained as bye-products in the catalytic preparation of methanol or butanol or in bacterial processes. Ketonization may be performed by the method described in Specification 410,087. In examples: (1) a fraction of oxidized train oils having from 5 to 11 carbon atoms in the molecule is ketonized and then hydrogenated in the presence of cobalt; the resulting alcohols are treated with chlorsulphonic acid and neutralized; (2) oxidized paraffic wax is distilled and the esters collected as first runnings are ketonized by the process of Specification 410,087; the ketones are freed from iron by means of sulphuric acid, hydrogenated in the presence of copper-manganese-zinc catalyst and sulphonated; unsulphonated constituents are extracted by means of benzine after neutralization.ALSO:Secondary alcohols, obtained from aliphatic carboxylic acids having about 5 to 11 carbon atoms in the molecule or esters or anhydrides thereof by first converting them into ketones and then reducing the latter are sulphonated to obtain dispersing-agents. The fatty acids used as starting material may be those obtained by the oxidation of fats, oils, waxes or hydrocarbons or those obtained as bye-products in the catalytic preparation of methanol or butanol or in bacterial processes. In examples the fatty acids or esters used as starting material are those obtained by fractionating oxidized train oil and by oxidizing paraffin wax.
