Abstract

518,188. Fuel-injection pumps. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Aug. 17, 1938, No. 24267. Convention date, Aug. 19, 1937. [Class 102 (i)] In a fuel-injection pump the piston 11 has a groove 12, connected by ports 13, 15 to the pumping chamber 10, and which co-operates with the by-pass port 3 to control the delivery. A recess 14 in communication with port 13 is provided and is of larger area than the groove 12 to cause a side thrust on the piston 11 to increase pressure around the groove 12. The grooves 12, 14 may be of helical form or the piston may be shaped as shown in Fig. 5 wherein the groove 14 is replaced by a slot 33 communicating by a circumferential groove 34 with the metering groove 32.
