Abstract

517,683. Electric batteries. PELLINI, J. Aug. 3, 1938, No. 22993. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1937. [Class 53] A battery comprises two electrodes and solutions separated by a porous wall enclosed in a liquid tight receptacle, which is such that when it is inverted the electrolytes are not in contact with the electrodes nor with each other. The receptacle is formed in two halves 1, 2, Fig. 1, held together by a clamping ring 4. In the lower half 1 is a zinc electrode 21 making contact with an external strip 22 and a carbon electrode 13 whose external connection is in the form of a metal rod 16 passing through a liquid tight tube 14 to a terminal 17. The electrolytes for the operation of the cell are separated by a porous pot 8 making liquid tight connection with a flat member 3 separating the upper and lower parts of the container. When the container is inverted the electrolytes pass through holes 10 in the member 3 into the upper half 2 where they are separated by a liquid tight cylindrical partition 9. When used in a hand lamp the container may have a holder 20 for a bulb 19, one terminal of which makes direct contact with the terminal 17, and a handle 24 is provided making pivotal connection with the casing such that the latter may be turned about this pivot when it is desired to transfer the electrolyte from one part to the other. If desired the container may comprise in one block two or more such cells with their terminals externally connected in any desired manner.
