Abstract

395,128. Batteries. RATHBONE, G., 39, Percy Street, Northwich, Cheshire, and WYERS, A., 11, Hargreaves Street, Chorltonon-Medlock, Manchester. May 7, 1932, No. 13182. [Class 53.] A battery comprises two cells in series, each cell having a positive electrode of copper and a negative electrode which may be of magnesium in a solution of copper sulphate. A holder is provided for the negative electrodes when the battery is not in use. The positive electrodes consist of closed copper tubes A, B, one of which is provided with a wrapping T of insulating material such as mica, and a screwed terminal rod S. Both tubes are fitted with a loose lining of copper foil to prevent the deposition of metal on the main part of the tubes during the working of the battery. Each tube is closed by an ebonite stopper C having a central opening fitted with a rubber washer E. Attached to the bottom of the stopper is a copper washer F having a central hole the edge of which is sharpened to act as a scraper. The tubes A, B are supported in a metal clamp or holder X to which two additional tubes H are fixed to receive the negative electrodes K when the battery is not in use. When current is required the negative electrodes are pushed through the holes in the stoppers C as shown in Fig. 6. The cells are connected in series by a copper strip O carried by an ebonite plate J. The copper strip has apertures to receive the terminal N2 of the negative electrode of one cell and the terminal rod S of the positive electrode of the other cell. The poles of the battery are constituted by the terminal N1 of one of the negative electrodes, and the clamp or holder X.
