Abstract

517,380. Pneumatic springs. DOWTY, G. H. July 21, 1938, Nos. 21704 and 27189. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] An aircraft undercarriage includes a shock absorber comprising a cylinder 5 pivoted at 3 to the undercarriage leg 1, and a piston 7 connected by a link 8 to a pivot 4. Liquid is displaced from the cylinder 5 to a chamber 9 in the hollow spindle of the wheel past a valve 16 and through a passage 19. The valve is readily accessible by removal of a cap 18. The liquid displaced into the spindle acts against an idle piston 20 which retains compressed air in the chamber 9, and separates the liquid from the air. The other end of the spindle chamber is closed by a plug 28 having an inflation fitting 23. Specifications 517,370 and 517,373, [Both in Group XXXIII], are referred to.
