Abstract
520,944. Aircraft alighting-gear. DOWTY, G. H. Nov. 2, 1938, No. 31775. [Class 4] An aircraft undercarriage-unit includes a rigid fitting adapted to be attached to the lower extremity of a downwardly extending undercarriage structure, a wheelcarrying lever of a fluid shock-absorber of the piston and cylinder type incorporated with the fitting, the whole being constituted so that it is attachable as a whole to the structure without any further support or attachment. As shown, a fitting 3c is connected to a subsidiary undercarriage member 2 and is rigidly attached to an undercarriage strut 1. The fitting includes a spigot 3B adapted to be inserted and secured in the strut 1 and fork-like arms between which a wheel-carrying lever 6 is pivoted. A cylinder 3D is formed in the fitting, and a piston 11 in the cylinder is connected to the lever 6. A piston 13 in the spigot 3B is adapted to move against compressed air when fluid is displaced by the piston 11 from the cylinder 3D, past a damping or check valve 14. The lever is arranged so that the wheel axis 7 does not depart substantially from the axis of the strut 1.
