Abstract

517,215. Plate heat-exchangers. PERSSON, R. A., and NAUCLER, J. O. May 21, 1938. No. 15221. Convention date, May 22, 1937. [Class 64 (iii)]. A heat-exchanger comprises superposed spirally-corrugated plates, separated if desired by plane plates, forming adjacent passages for the fluids between which heat is to be exchanged, and inlets and outlets for the fluids disposed so that each fluid flows only from the centre to the periphery or vice versa. The plates 10, Fig. 7, may be spaced by inner and outer rings 22, 23 of hard rubbber &c. and clamped between covers having inlets and outlets 41, 43 and 42, 44 respectively communicating with ducts 30 ... 33 formed by aligned ports in the plates and the rings. The fluid admitted to the duct 30 passses through the openings 26 in the alternate rings 22 into the corresponding spiral passages, and then through openings 29 in the inner rings and the duct 33 to the outlet 44, the other fluid passing from the duct 32 through the alternate spiral passages to the outlet 42. Both fluids may, however, pass through the passages in the same direction. The exchanger may be formed of alternate flat and corrugated plates 10, 11, Fig. 2. Further, the corrugations may be of the form shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the section of the corrugation on one side of each plate decreases progressively from the periphery to the centre, this arrangement being particularly suitable for apparatus used in the generation or the condensation of steam. Two or more corrugations in parallel may be formed on opposite sides of the plates.
