Abstract

516,482. Two-part couplings combined with protective devices. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and BARSDORF, L. W. June 28, 1938, No. 19124. [Class 38 (i)] In order to protect an electrical apparatus against surges or excessive voltages it is connected to the supply through a coupling in which is incorporated a spark gap or like protective means. The live pins 1 of a three pin plug coupling are mounted on a base 2 by means of a screw shank passing through an insulating bushing 4, metal washers 5, 7, a perforated sheet of insulation 6, a block of carborundum 8 and a strip 9 connected to the earthing pin. The perforated sheet constitutes the spark gap by which surges are by-passed to earth through the carborundum resistance.
