Abstract

516,358. Valve circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and JACOBSEN, B. B. June 21, 1938, No. 18423. [Class 40(v)] A stabilized negative resistance or conductance device adopted to compensate for the positive dissipation of a tuned circuit, wave filter, or network, comprises amplifying valves, e.g. of pentode type, provided with both positive and negative feed-back circuits. The negative resistance or conductance may be temperaturedependent such that it compensates for the temperature-dependent loss in the tuned circuit &c. with which it is associated, and may also be frequency-dependent by using a frequency-dependent positive or negative feedback. Fig. 6 shows a negative-conductance arrangement comprising two pentodes VI, V2 associated with a tuned circuit Lo, Co in the output circuit. An output-voltage-dependent positive feed-back connection P is taken from a potentiometer B, B1 in the output of V2 to the input grid of V1, and an output-currentdependent negative feed-back connection N is taken from a resistance R7 in the cathode lead of V2. Fig. 7 shows a negative-conductance arrangement associated with a tuned circuit C1, L1 in the input circuit and having an outputvoltage-dependent positive feed-back from potentiometer R3, R4, R5 and an outputvoltage -dependent negative feed-back N over resistance D. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the impedance of the input circuit is matched by the inclusion of a pad having the same characteristic impedance, the output of the pad being connected into the tuned circuit L1, C1. A temperature-dependent effect may be obtained by making resistance R5 of copper and R4 of a material of very low temperature coefficient and suitably proportioning R4 and R5, or by making part of resistance D of copper. Other arrangements are shown, Figs 9 and 10 (not shown), providing negative resistance devices, having output-current-dependent positive feed-back and output-voltagedependent or current-dependent negative feedback.
