Abstract

514,927. Converting. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., and WHITELEY, A. L. June 10, 1938, No. 17301. [Class 38 (ii)] Relates to a system in which a load capable of regeneration is supplied from a rectifier and means are provided for inserting a resistance 2 across the load during regeneration, and consists in using a discharge device T as the means for detecting when regeneration occurs and for operating the contactor 1a which inserts the resistance. To the grid of the valve is applied a bias proportional to the line voltage, opposed to a constant negative bias so that the valve becomes conductive when the line voltage rises above a predetermined value. A maintaining circuit for the coil 1 is completed through the contacts 1b, 6a and this is opened to open the contactor when the contacts 6a are opened by a time delay relay 6 under the control of a directional relay 5. The directional relay also controls the insertion of a resistance 4 by means of contactor 3a when the load drops below a given value to maintain the rectifier operating above the'transition point. In a modification a number of resistances 2 each with a control discharge device T and operating in succession may be used. Specification 502,568 is referred to.
