Abstract

864,755. Control of A.C. motors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 13, 1957 [Sept. 13, 1956], No. 28021/56. Class 38 (3). The rate of reduction of the rotor resistance of an induction motor is controlled by a magnetic amplifier MS which is biased to provide maximum output since its control coil is supplied with a reference voltage, this voltage being opposed by a voltage dependent upon the stator or rotor currents of the motor, Fig. 2 (not shown). The premature closure of rotor resistance contactors is prevented by means of pilot relays which are operated when the voltage applied to them from the amplifier exceeds a predetermined value which corresponds to a permissible torque-value of the motor. Coil PC2 of a pilot relay is prepared for operation by closure of contact C1 (controlled by a previous relay), but the relay is operated only when a timing contact T2 is closed, at a predetermined instant, and the motor torque has fallen to a predetermined value, so that the voltage supplied by the amplifier MS is sufficient. The opening of contact PC2<SP>1</SP> and the closure of contact PC2<SP>11</SP> transfers the coil PC2 to the supply-line SL. Successive operation of similar relays PC3, PC4, PC5, removes further sections of the rotor resistance. In a modification, a liquid rotor resistance is reduced, at different rates, by an hydraulic servo device, and the change in rate is controlled by the magnetic amplifier through a solenoidoperated valve.
