Abstract

1343981 Protective arrangements DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 17 May 1972 [21 May 1971] 16182/71 Heading H2K An arrangement for controlling the supply to a load 2, includes a current sensor 4, a pulse shaping circuit 6 which provides a single pulse of predetermined shape, magnitude and duration when the current sensor output exceeds a predetermined magnitude, and a comparator circuit 7 which provides a control signal whenever the current sensor output is greater than the instantaneous voltage of the pulse. The control signal may cause the opening of a "contactor" formed by an electromagnetic relay or a thyristor switching circuit. The current sensor may be a magnetic amplifier if the power supply is from a D.C. source, or one or more current transformers if the supply is a single phase or multiphase A.C. source. A switch 8 is closed, when the contactor 3 is closed, to provide an input to a threshold circuit 5 which also has an input from the sensor and provides a signal to the pulse circuit 6 when the current sensor output exceeds the predetermined magnitude. A pulse shaping circuit is described, Fig. 2 (not shown), and provides a pulse shaped so that opening of the contactor does not occur under normal motor starting conditions or short transient overload conditions.
