Abstract

542,107. Switching systems for electric welding. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and HIGGINS, B. G. Nov. 4, 1940, No. 16047. Addition to 463,561. [Class 38 (iv)] The period of application of supply to an electric weld is determined, automatically, by the rate of discharge of the condenser 10 which is normally on charge from the secondary 7 through the rectifier 11, is disconnected therefrom when the switches 18, 19 are moved over by manuallycontrolled energization of their operating coil 16, and thus connected to the grid of the discharge device 2 the anode current of which is adapted to energize the coil 3 and close the welding supply contact. The condenser makes the grid positive and the valve 2 conductive with consequent closure of the contactor; the slow discharge of the condenser allows the negative bias on the grid to re-establish control after a time and thus render the valve non-conductive again and break the energizing circuits of the welding contactor. As the charging of the condenser takes place when there is no welding load on the system, this charging is unaffected by variations of voltage and accurate timing is ensured.
