Abstract
514,628. Rotary engines and pumps. LEWINGTON, W. J. May 10, 1938, No. 13906. [Class 110 (ii)] The working chamber space is formed by two concentric cylinders and intervening sleeves SM1, SM2, Fig. 6, and shown in development in Fig. 2. The opposed edges of the sleeves form the endwalls of the working chambers and are of zigzag shape with opposed points st;, st, and st2, st4. A narrow sleeve M, Figs. 3 and 6, with parallel zig-zag walls lies in the working chamber space and divides it into several working chambers which are provided with suitable ports and, it may be, with sparking plugs. A combination of rotary and axially sliding movements result from the operating of the engine or pump and an outer sleeve is coupled by pins and slots to the rotor so that it can receive and transmit the rotary motion.. Alternatively, the machine can be arranged to provide only axial reciprocatory motion or a combination of that and rotary motion. The machine can be used as an engine or as a pump and as an internal-combustion engine can operate on either the four stroke or the two-stroke cycle. The rotor may be made with opposed points. The points on the end-wall sleeves are in that case staggered. Specification 407,072 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
