Abstract

514,391. Suspending vehicle bodies. VOIGT, C. A. May 4, 1938, No. 13238. Convention date, May 4, 1937. [Classes 108 (i), 108 (ii) and 108 (iii) ] A body unit for a road vehicle is adapted to be supported by resilient devices so arranged as to be stressed mainly in shear by verticallvacting forces due, e.g., to the weight of the unit, and mainly in compression by horizontallyacting forces, due, e.g., to acceleration or retardation of the vehicle or to centrifugal action. The motor-car shown in Fig. 1, is composed of motor, passenger, and luggage-carrying units A, B, C respectively, the units A, C being connected by the chassis-frame 1 and the unit B supported from the units A, C by front and rear resilient mountings shown in Figs. 2 and 4, 5 respectively. The front mounting is circular and comprises a rubber cap'5, 6 which extends over vertical member 3 riveted to a plate 2 on the unit A and is vulcanised between the member 3 and an outer sleeve 7 riveted to a stiffening member 8, 8' on the unit B. A rubber plate 10 on the unit B prevents excessive upward movement of the member 3. The rear mounting comprises two U-section rubber blocks 15, 16, Figs 4, 5, vulcanised to the web 13 and flanges 13<1> of an I-shaped member fixed to the rear wall of the unit B. Plates 17 are secured in the recessed parts of the rubber blocks and connected to cheeks 12 on the unit C. Springs 21 or pneumatic or hydraulic dampers 22 may be provided to improve the stability of the unit B. Fig. 8 shows a front mounting for a vehicle in which the units A, B are combined, the mounting comprising rubber blocks 33, 34 vulcanised respectively between plates 29, 30 and plates 31, 32, the plates 29, 32 being secured to the unit A and the plates 30, 31 to the unit B. The plate 32 is connected to the unit A by a sleeve and bolt device 28, 35, Fig. 9 shows one or two rear mountings arranged on opposite sides of the vehicle and each comprising a rubber block 40 vulcanised between metal plates 39 connected by screw fastenings 44 with the chassis 1 and unit B.
