Abstract
587,164. Resiliently mounting tanks on vehicles. BUTTERFIELD, Ltd., W. P., and MOSBY, G. P. May 26, 1944, Nos. 10286/44 and 11595/45. [Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii)] A tank 2 is supported on a vehicle chassis 3, or bearers thereon, by means of a number of resilient mountings each comprising a rubber block 4 to which upper and lower metal plates 5, 6 are bonded for securing the mounting to the tank and chassis members respectively the block normally being substantially wholly under compression within a housing 11 which permits restricted deformation of the block when under load and when submitted to shear stresses caused by lateral and longitudinal movements of the tank. As shown, bolts 7, the heads of which are bonded to the rubber, project through each plate and secure the mounting to a lower channel-section bearer 8 fixed to the chassis and to the housing 11 which has side clearance to allow for the deformation of the rubber. Shearing action on the bolts 7 is prevented by side flanges 10 on the plate 6 closely fitting the bearer 8 and by a projecting part 12 on the plate 5 engaging a recess in the' housing 11. When the block 4 is excessively compressed, flanges 13 on the housing are adapted to engage a rubber snubbing ring 20 which is bonded to a fixing plate 21 secured to the base 9 of the bearer 8. To allow greater flexibility in the mounting, the side walls of the block may be recessed and the block may be composed of different grades of rubber, have a different core, or be of laminated construction. The tank 2 is shown mounted on a rubber pad or pads 17 on a transverse bolster 14 of inverted V-section which bridges a pair of transversely-spaced mountings and is secured to the flanges 13 on the two housings 11, the tank being held in position by adjustable straps 18 secured by bolts 19 to the bolster. Instead of a bolster, the mountings may be associated with tank feet, rests, or other supports.
