514,334. Converting; supply systems for cathode-ray tubes. FAUDELL, C. L. May 3, 1938, No. 13171. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] In an arrangement including series inductance and shunt capacity smoothing means, for supplying rectified A.C. to a load, a substantial part of which can be switched in or out of circuit, a part of the shunt capacity is rendered ineffective when the load is switched out of circuit. In the application to a combined sound and television receiver including means for switching off unused vision stages where only sound signals are being received, the A.C. source 2 supplies transformers 3 for the heaters of the valves used for television and for the energization of the cathode ray tube, while transformer 4 supplies A.C. to the heaters of the sound valves and to a rectifier 6 for supplying H.T. current to all the valves. The H.T. current is smoothed by inductances 13, 14, 15 and condensers 8-12 before it is led to sound and television rectification leads 16 and 17. When transformer 3 is cut out by switch 20, condenser 3 is simultaneously rendered ineffective by the opening of switch 18. A high resistance 19 in series with condenser 8 maintains a static charge on the condenser when switch 18 is open so that there is no appreciable sudden charging action when the switch is closed.
