Abstract

514,108. Bearings. ATKINS, H. F. April 27, 1938, No. 12515. [Class 12 (i)] In a high speed spindle bearing, the spindle 1 and bearing member have numerous concentric ribs 3 with opposed inclined faces to take radial and end thrust, the ribs extending for a length at least equal to the spindle diameter. As shown, a grinding spindle is mounted in a pair of bearings 5, 6. Each bearing is in three sections, one of which is adjustable radially by the action of a spring 20 which acts on wedge pieces 18, 19 and on a bar 16. A ball 23 is arranged between the segment 12 and the bar 16. The curvature of the grooves and ribs of the bearing segments is less than that of the corresponding parts of the spindle. The bearings are housed in a carrier 8 bolted to a support 11. One of the bearings 5, 6 may be a plain bearing.
