Abstract

513,595. Glycerin. NATIONAL MAIZE PRODUCTS, Ltd. April 8, 1938, Nos. 10841 and 10842. Convention dates, Sept. 15, 1937, and Feb. 26, 1938. Drawings to Specification. [Class 91] Glycerol is extracted from impure aqueous solutions, such as concentrated fermentation slop, by means of butanol. The extraction may be effected in stages in counter-current, the quantity of solvent and aqueous liquor being preferably so chosen that the same fraction of the glycerol is effected at each stage. The glycerol may be separated from the extract by distillation, or the extract may be treated with water (which may be saturated with a salt such as sodium chloride) preferably in stages in counter-current so as to obtain a purified aqueous solution from which the glycerol is obtained by distillation. Some of the impurities are left in the slop residue, and some are left in the butanol when the glycerol is washed out. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes the use of solvents (unspecified, except as to their properties) other than butanol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
