513,419. Dyes ; dyeing and printing. KNIGHT, A. H., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 4, 1938, No. 10331. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Water-soluble azo dyestuffs are manufactured by combining diazotized 6-chloro- or 6- bromo-2:4-dinitraniline with a coupling component of the general formula where R1 is alkyl (methyl to butyl) and R2 is a sulphatoethyl group. Alternatively there are .employed coupling components of the above formula in which R2 is a hydroxyethyl group, and the resulting dyestuffs are treated with agents capable of converting them into their sulphuric esters, e.g., sulphuric acid. The products are suitable for dyeing and printing acetate artificial silk, and for dyeing wool, natural silk, tin-weighted silk and leather. The dyeings are dischargeable. In examples : (1) 6-chloro- or 6-bromo-2:4-dinitraniline is diazotized and coupled with N-n-butyl-N-#- sulphatoethyl-m-toluidine; (2) the dyestuff 6-chloro- or 6-bromo-2:4-dinitraniline# N-nbutyl-N-#-hydroxyethyl-m-toluidine is treated with concentrated sulphuric acid ; (3) 6- chloro-2:4-dinitraniline is diazotized and coupled with N-ethyl-N-sulphatoethyl-m-toluidine; (4) 6-bromo-2:4-dinitraniline is diazotized and coupled with N-isopropyl-N-sulphatoethyl-mtoluidine.
